October 2nd a Nonviolence Day in the White West

EDUCATION FOR PEACE .

An article from Pressenza (reprinted under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license)

This year it’s really complicated in this part of the world to hold a joyful celebration about nonviolence. The International Day of Nonviolence is a celebration of Gandhi’s birthday and an opportunity to commemorate the work of many others who have opened a path a to nonviolent conflict resolution, built a culture of peace, opposed systemic discrimination, and fought against the destruction of humanity’s habitat.

It is very suspicious that mainstream media will be not be covering this day, since corporate media makes large profits from reporting all forms of violence and bias. There will be no trending on Twitter, no special debate in Congress. Joe Biden will not be announcing his plans for developing nonviolence curricula for Kindergarten to college students. CEOs won’t unroll their strategy for reinvesting the money, concentred today in very few hands, to serve the community at large. And we probably won’t see the police addressing their entrenched discrimination against communities of color, and talking about how to stop being hypermilitarized agents beating and killing people on the street. This list can go on and on.

Now, of course, we have seen some opportunist politicians asking protestors — after seeing the killing of their brothers by police — to organize nonviolently, but without themselves condemning the immoral and disproportionate use of violence by the police and city officals. For them, it seems nonviolence is to be used by minorities fighting against a violent system that created the problem at the first place.

(Article continued in the right column)

Question for this article:

Can peace be guaranteed through nonviolent means?

(Article continued from the left column)

Today, we recognize nonviolence’s power of transformation. Nonviolence has transformed countries, changed the face of continents, and given cultural identity to discriminated communities. We are perhaps in front of the total collapse of this violent system we live in and we need to actively build a culture of nonviolence. It is the only real option for the future of the human race and our environment.

In closing, here are few words from Silo, an Argentinian leader in nonviolence, extracted from one of his most important speeches, “The Healing of Suffering,” given in Punta de Vacas, Argentina on May 4, 1969:

“There are other forms of violence that are imposed by the Philistine morality. You wish to impose your way of life upon another; you wish to impose your vocation upon another. But who has told you that you are an example that must be followed? Who has told you that you can impose a way of life because it pleases you? What makes your way of life a model, a pattern that you have the right to impose on others? This, then, is another form of violence.

Only inner faith and inner meditation can end the violence in you, in others, and in the world around you. All the other doors are false and do not lead away from this violence. This world is on the verge of exploding with no way to end the violence! Do not choose false doors. There are no politics that can solve this mad urge for violence. There is no political party or movement on the planet that can end the violence. Do not choose false doors that promise to lead away from the violence in the world… I have heard that all over the world young people are turning to false doors to try to escape the violence and inner suffering. They turn to drugs as a solution. Do not choose false doors to try to end the violence.

My brother, my sister, keep these simple commandments, as simple as these rocks, this snow, and this sun that bless us. Carry peace within you, and carry it to others. My brother, my sister—if you look back in history, you will see the human being bearing the face of suffering. Remember, even as you gaze at that suffering face, that it is necessary to move forward, and it is necessary to learn to laugh, and it is necessary to learn to love.

To you, my brother and sister, I cast this hope—this hope of joy, this hope of love—so that you elevate your heart and elevate your spirit, and so that you do not forget to elevate your body.”

SVIATOHIRSK, DONETSK REGION, UKRAINE

On September 21, 2020, the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the International Day of Peace, the International Forum “People of Peace” took place in the Holy Dormition Svyatogorsk Lavra. This was reported by the Information and Education Department of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The decision to continue the peacekeeping initiatives of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church to end the armed conflict in Donbas and in this regard to hold the forum “People of Peace” was made by the Holy Synod of the UOC on August 17 . The initiative was supported by representatives of civil society – residents of Donbass and other regions of Ukraine who are not politicians and do not represent political institutions. As His Beatitude Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Ukraine Onufriy emphasized, the idea of the Forum is to include in the negotiation process in Donbass ordinary people who were directly affected by the war in eastern Ukraine. . . Metropolitan Arseniy of Svyatogorsk thanked Metropolitan Anthony for the joint service, drawing attention to the mission entrusted to the Head of the UOC Affairs with the blessing of His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufriy. “Blessed are the peacemakers,” says the Lord. We dare to take on the title of peacemaker, so as not to renounce the great title of sons of God. Bishop Anthony came to support from the Council of Bishops of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which from the first days of trouble was the mother of the people, when it received refugees, sent humanitarian aid, sent money, clothes – everything that refugees in our Lavra needed. Our Church was, is and will be a mother.” Bishop Arseniy also stressed that the Church, according to modern sociology, is trusted by more than 76% of the population of Ukraine.  . . . His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufriy named the main purpose of the event.
“The purpose of our communication today is, on the one hand, to show the common people and their suffering, and, on the other, to show a strong desire for peace.”
His Beatitude also proposed a number of principles on which to build a cause of harmony and reconciliation. The first step towards peace, he said, should be to establish human communication between the two sides of the conflict. Next – identifying the common, what unites, not divides, and focusing on it. The end of the peace process should be mutual forgiveness. . . Bishop Anthony shared his experience of meeting with children-migrants in the Svyatogorsk Lavra: “Many of them grew up in the Lavra, some were even born here. Many of them do not know the comfort of home. Yes, the Church has sheltered people, but we understand how important the role of our father’s house, the warmth of our father and mother, plays in our lives. And when children distinguish, unfortunately, which bullet whistles from which weapon, it’s very scary. That is why the most important thing for us is to do everything so that their future is peaceful, so that they no longer know the experiences that are in their lives. ” The hierarch also expressed hope that the voice of the Church, as the voice of the people, will be listened to by those on whom peace in Donbass especially depends. “We would very much like politicians to listen to the voice of the Church,” said the UOC Affairs Manager. – The voice of the Church is the voice of the people. It is possible that we have approached the principle of gathering without politicians, although we understand that this issue cannot be resolved without politicians. ”

Alexey Trinov, Deputy Head of the Department for Life Support of Chervonopartizansk, addressed the gathered residents: “Peace is very important for humanity, it allows us to develop the economy and statehood, raise children, and live in pleasure. But in a war, all this fades into the background, losing our humanity. We saw in 2014 what hostilities lead to, it is scary and destructive … Keep the peace and may our sky be clear and sunny ”. The same message was expressed by the ataman of the Chervonopartisan branch of the international Cossack association “The Great Brotherhood of Cossack Troops” Nikolai Kozharin:  . . . during the event, poems from the poetess Irina Lobanova and young Kira Ryabova, as well as a song from the exemplary vocal ensemble “Prestige” were performed. DONBASS

Every year on September 21, the public celebrates the International Day of Peace. Ukraine has long celebrated such holidays and the fact is that on this day it is forbidden to shoot. So, even this early morning from the side of the armed formations of Ukraine, a sniper shot was fired towards the village. Unfortunately, the situation along the contact line continues to escalate. The Minsk protocols, the “Normandy format”, the disengagement of forces and equipment – all these are just fine words. Convenient rhetoric for politicians, for which innocent residents of settlements along the contact line pay with their lives and health. Thus, Ukraine once again shows its unwillingness to resolve the military conflict in Donbass peacefully, it will do everything in order to destroy the infrastructure of Donbass as much as possible. The crimes of the Ukrainian military against civilians have no statute of limitations. When the UN Secretary General strikes the Peace Bell, think about the future of Ukraine and the need to moderate fervor, hide your ambitions and maximalism, and think about the main need and right of every person – the right to peace.

We, like no one else, know what peace is and how easily it collapses. I hope that you will keep the peace in our land, because the future of the Republic depends on you and me. We will all be to honor the memory of those who gave us peace “, – Victoria Tarasova, chief specialist of the Krepensky village life support department, addressed the action participants. This topic for discussion on the International Day of Peace was not chosen by chance, because it is the universal, unswerving observance of human and civil rights and freedoms that is the key to ending wars and armed confrontations on the planet. The meeting of the Ombudsman with the NOP students lasted over two hours, the conversation was emotional and productive.

LUGANSK

Social activists of the Republic on the International Day of Peace honored the memory of the Lugansk people who died as a result of shelling from the Kiev security forces. The event was attended by representatives of the Public Chamber (CP) of the LPR and representatives of the public organization (PA) “Memorial”. The participants of the event honored the memory of the victims with a minute of silence, and then laid flowers at the memorial “We will not forget, we will not forgive”, installed at the site of the mass grave of residents of Lugansk. . . Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the LPR, Chairman of the Special Commission for Recording and Collecting Evidence of Crimes of the Military-Political Leadership of Ukraine, Chairman of the Board of the NGO Memorial Anna Soroka noted with regret that, despite the existence of carefully spelled out international legislation aimed at preventing military conflicts, Donbass continues to “sound the weapon”. “We cannot just stand aside and look at what is happening here. Donbass, like no other land, now understands the price of all these calls, the price of all these acts, conventions and loud statements,” she said. Soroka recalled that the war in Donbass has been going on since 2014, while shelling from the Ukrainian Armed Forces does not stop even on Peace Day. “We demand that we be heard, we demand that our appeals and claims by all international instances are objectively studied and a fair assessment is given to them,” the deputy minister called on international organizations.

Dunaevsky “Fly the pigeons, fly.” School students rang the bell as a reminder to humanity that peace is a great value, and it is not enough to dream about it, to achieve it requires a lot and hard work.

For residents of the front-line Slavyanoserbsk region, the word “Mir” has a special meaning. We stand for a peaceful, happy life without war and want our aspirations to be supported not only by the residents of the Republic, but also by all caring people who are not indifferent to the fate of Donbass, – said the activist of the “Young Guard” project. Activists distributed about 50 paper doves to passers-by.

An action timed to coincide with the International Day of Peace took place on the central square of Stakhanov. The event was attended by the head of the city administration Sergey Zhevlakov, deputy of the People’s Council of the LPR Svetlana Aleshina, member of the LPR Public Chamber Lyudmila Luganskaya, chairman of the city Council of veterans Yevgeny Shumeiko, representatives of the clergy, public and youth organizations, city residents.
During the action, students of Stakhanov’s schools and gymnasiums deployed on the square a 75-meter “Canvas of Peace” with images of pigeons, the globe, the sun, flowers and the paraphernalia of Victory Day. “To our deepest regret, a war has been going on on our territory for six years, which the Ukrainian leadership has unleashed. During this period, 21 civilians of the cities of Stakhanov, Irmino and Almaznaya, including children, were killed, almost 60 were wounded. I really want to believe that someday on our territory, as before, it will be quiet and calm, and instead of cannon fire of guns, explosions of shells, we will hear carefree children’s laughter. We know the value of peace, and I sincerely wish peace on our land to come as quickly as possible, ” said Zhevlakov. Amateur artists from the city Palace of Culture named after Maxim Gorky presented the participants of the action a choreographic performance “Let there always be sunshine!” At the end of the event, schoolchildren released balloons into the sky – a symbol of peace, freedom and goodness.

GRENOBLE, FRANCE

Peace march. Departure: Place St Bruno, in Grenoble (in front of the small amphitheater) at 10 a.m.
Arrival: Place Lavalette (in front of the new museum)
This March of Peace, which is part of the International Day of Peace on September 21, decided by the UN 20 years ago, will be repeated that same day in dozens of cities in France, as well as in many foreign countries.
It intends to demonstrate the will for peace which drives many of our fellow citizens, in France and elsewhere. Isère does not intend to be outdone of this fine ambition, undoubtedly the noblest of all.
This march also aims to put pressure on our government to sign (finally) the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TIAN) adopted by a majority of States in 2017, but snubbed by our country until then. All that is needed is the signature of six countries for this treaty to have binding legal force at the international level. Now is not the time to relax our civic effort …
The more of us there are on this occasion, the greater will be our political force.
We will be free to bring the banner of our imagination, or even our favorite musical instrument.
Naturally, in doing so, we will respect all the prophylactic rules imposed by the current epidemic: protective masks, distancing; we will occupy all the space that will be suitable for this purpose.

At 12:00 Noon in each time zone on Monday, invited participants will observe a Minute of Silence, resulting in a “Peace Wave” around the world.

WALES UNIVERSITIES, UNITED KINGDOM

Today, on World Peace Day, every university in Wales has signed a Memorandum of Understanding, along with the Learned Society of Wales, the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol and the Welsh Centre for International Affairs, leading to the establishment of Academi Heddwch Cymru. Academi Heddwch Cymru’s aim is to extend Wales’ strong tradition of peace-making and peace-promotion. By developing and coordinating an independent community of researchers in related fields, Academi Heddwch Cymru will work to place peace firmly on the national agenda. On the international stage, it will become part of a global network of peace institutes.

WALES, UNITED KINGDOM

As well as participating in a global initiatives to create ‘paper cranes’ marking #PeaceDay2020 with WCIA (Welsh Centre for International Affairs) and UNA (United Nations Association) Exchange’s youth volunteering partners worldwide, the International Day of Peace will also be marked by 2 exciting new projects looking to the future: the launch of Academi Heddwch, a Peace Academy network for Wales; and the start of a new research programme into the ‘History of Welsh Internationalism‘ between WCIA, Aberystwyth & Swansea Universities, and the Academi Heddwch network. The Peace Cranes initiative that WCIA and UNA Exchange are participating in alongside our global partners in the International Volunteering Alliance, CCIVS and UNESCO, is inspired by the story of Sadako Sasaki – a child survivor of the Hiroshima Nuclear Bomb on Japan. Sadako set out to create a thousand paper cranes, wishing for a world without war – but following her death from radiation poisoning in 1955, children (and adults alike) have continued her wish worldwide to this day.
Members of the WCIA team and volunteers each created cranes to form a colourful sculptural ‘flock’ reflecting WCIA’s peace pathways – 7 themes of internationalist action (remembering war, opposing conflict, offering sanctuary to refugees, championing women and equalities, building international solidarity, inspiring future generations, and working in collaboration).

CALGARY : Although the COVID-19 pandemic prevented her from coming here to accept the award in person, Stephanie Nolen remains grateful for being named the recipient of the Calgary Peace Prize for 2020. Awarded by the John de Chastelain Peace Studies Initiative at Mount Royal University, the Calgary Peace Prize recognizes outstanding individuals from the global community who work towards making the world a more just, safer and less violent place. As the world marks the International Day of Peace on Sept. 21, the recipients of the prize remain important examples of working towards that elusive goal. . . “Stephanie Nolen’s reporting has shone a light on some of the most important peace and justice issues of our time,” said acting Peace Prize co-ordinator and MRU policy studies professor Kari Roberts, PhD. “Her leadership through journalism has informed and engaged Canadians, giving them the information they need to promote change. Her work covering wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the AIDS epidemic, gender inequality and other humanitarian crises in Africa, Asia and South America has given voice to victims and explained these events to Canadians.

It’s part of this year’s celebration of “Kings for Peace Week.” (Eric Stone/KRBD). Students and community members rallied in Ketchikan Saturday as part of an annual event known as “Kings for Peace Week.” It’s a commemoration of both peace on the international stage and community togetherness. . . The celebration this year looks radically different than it did in years past. There’s usually a Peace Day assembly, a Peace Day dance — this year, there’s a Peace Day dance challenge on Instagram. Each speech honored the first responders of Dawson County, from the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, Dawson County Emergency Services and Dawson County Public Works. “We have a lot of opportunities throughout the year to honor our veterans and those who have served in the military, but sometimes it’s easy for us to forget those folks who get up every day and work every night protecting us here at home,” Tanner said. “Thank you for all you do, those that are out in front and those who are behind the scenes like our 911 workers, our jail personnel, our court staff and others who we don’t get to see all that often but are just as important.”

Thus, I would like to ask for your blessing.” To participate from one’s temple, church, school, home or favorite place, all you need is a bell to ring, and a cellphone, computer or another device to connect online via Zoom. NEW YORK – UNITED NATIONS : Speaking in front of the Japanese Peace Bell on the grounds of the UN Secretariat, Mr. Guterres outlined how the coronavirus is putting peace at risk, prompting him in March to appeal for a global ceasefire shortly after the pandemic was declared.  “Beyond war zones, the pandemic is highlighting and exploiting inequalities of all kinds, setting communities and countries against each other,” he stated.  Prior to ringing the bell, the Secretary-General called for a minute of silence for victims of war and conflict around the world.  . . The Secretary-General described the Peace Bell as a symbol of unity, cast from coins and medals donated by people all over the world.  It was gifted to the UN by Japan in 1954. Mr. Guterres noted that Japanese culture has a deep appreciation for natural imperfections and flaws, as reflected in an art form known as kintsugi, which takes broken pieces of pottery and fuses them together using golden lacquer.   “The result is a piece that is not ‘good as new’, but ‘better than new’. As we mark the International Day of Peace, let’s apply this principle to our fractured world,” he said. “Let’s address the fragilities and inequalities that work against peace, so that we emerge from the crisis stronger than before.   Let’s push for peace wherever conflict is raging and wherever there are diplomatic opportunities to silence the guns.  Let’s prioritize peace and build a safer future for all.”   The Peace Bell ceremony was beamed globally via live feed, with the UN chief and the new UN General Assembly President, Volkan Bozkir of Turkey, standing at appropriately distanced podiums, in line with COVID-19 measures.

Reconcile Sylva and the local NAACP chapter organized the event. It was a part of Campaign Nonviolence. “What more could you want in life then to live in peace,” said Dana Patterson, chair for the community coordination committee for the NAACP. Patterson said the vigil was important for many reasons.“For a community like that to bring us together to talk about what it means to actually achieve peace that is huge, that’s huge for such a small community,” said Patterson adding that she hopes continued discussions like this bring about a better world for children.

CHIPPEWAW VALLEY : September 21 is the International Day of Peace, a day observed around the world devoted to strengthening peace and non-violence between nations. To commemorate the day, a new event was held at the Highground Veterans Memorial Park and Museum on Monday afternoon. Organizers with the Highground Veteran’s Museum said as they were preparing 1,000 paper cranes for an upcoming World War II exhibit, they learned of the International Day of Peace, and with 300 paper cranes already made, they decided to put the physical symbols of peace to good use. Those cranes were hanging Monday afternoon as a reminder of peaceful intentions as attendees joined together with poems, songs, prayers and reflection during these difficult times. “I think it is such a perfect time for us to gather in a non-political matter to extend our hearts toward that promotion of peace; it’s very important,” said Theresa Hebert, the veteran’s museum and education program coordinator.
they hope to continue the event in the future.

Senior High School (SHS) students, on the other hand, commemorated the International Day of Peace in their own unique way. Some students took to Instagram to get involved in a Story Chain. The students struck a pose while wearing their white tops and also tagged their friends to take part in the Story Chain.

SINGAPORE

International Day of Peace Celebrated at Dover Court. The children were able to articulate that peace may mean giving people the space to think and relax, or that it means not arguing with one another and respecting difference in viewpoints. Where right now it may seem the world is pulling people apart from one another, we as a community are seeking ways to build connection through shared discussion and collaborative projects. In the Library we acknowledged International Peace Day by thinking about children around the world who may not live in a peaceful country. We thought about how lucky we are to live in the safety of Singapore.  We came up with some ideas of how we could acknowledge world peace day in our everyday lives by being kind to our siblings, showing love to our family etc.  We then looked at books about children around the world and some of us coloured doves of peace and wrote poems about peace.

SAIGON, VIETNAM

Launched this week on world peace day, Vietnam based independent restaurant chain Pizza 4Ps has partnered with Ki Saigon to bring to life their mission to make the world smile for peace, one pizza at a time. The agency thought of bringing together ingredients of nations in conflict to create ‘Peace Pizzas’. By combining tastes of these countries in harmony to attempt to prove that if ingredients can be together on a pizza, so can we on the planet. Over many months, their chefs Mr. Shotaro Hirukawa & Ms. Natsumi Kobayashi worked with the Ki Saigon team to create three individual ‘Peace Pizzas’: India & Pakistan; China & USA; Israel & Palestine. To celebrate the unity of flavors the agency transformed the 4PS pizza boxes to a garden of peace. The pizza boxes were re-engineered to open to an intricate, handcrafted three dimensional flower. Each flower is made by combining the colors of the two flags: Israel + Palestine, China + USA & India + Pakistan. 27 unique handmade flowers blossom with each pizza to celebrate peace and tranquility. A total of 250 of these boxes were also displayed as an art piece titled ‘garden of peace’ at one of their marque venues, which is holding a one week event to celebrate ‘peace week’ where the pizzas will be sold. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of the peace pizzas will go to the UN Peace Building Fund.
