Global Movement for a Culture of Peace

The Declaration and Programme of Action for a Culture of Peace , adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1999 included the following statement: “Partnerships between and among the various actors as set out in the Declaration should be encouraged and strengthened for a global movement for a culture of peace.”

The Global Movement for a Culture of Peace is advancing, according to accounts from all regions of the world. This was the conclusion from information submitted by over 1000 organizations taking part in the World Report on the Culture of Peace, which was submitted to the United Nations for its plenary discussion at the end of the International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-violence for the Children of the World (2001-2010). This report provided a comprehensive view of the progress of the Global Movement. The advance comes despite almost total neglect from the mass media, according to most accounts from all regions.

The Global Movement got off to a good start during the UN International Year for the Culture of Peace. This was described, at the time, on the world information board which provided links to 1,196 actors in the International Year, including 219 international organizations and 977 local and national actors. It also provided a link to details on who had gathered the 75 million signatures that were obtained on the Manifesto 2000 in India, Brazil, Colombia and other countries.

CPNN-WORLD provides a daily update on the continuing development of the Global Movement, including monthly bulletins since 2011.
