English bulletin October 1, 2019

. INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE .

In our survey this year we found 655 actions for the International Day of Peace that took place throughout the world. It is more or less the same number as last year, although we counted them in a different way this year.

The theme this year, decided by the United Nations, was climate action for peace. In this way the theme of peace was linked to the enormous mobilizations against climate change that took place this month throughout the world.

The greatest number of actions for the International Day of Peace, 280, took place in the United States and Canada, thanks to the remarkable mobilization by Campaign Nonviolence. To quote from their website:, “For three decades, Pace e Bene has been leading nonviolence trainings, publishing books on nonviolence, and taking action for nonviolent change. In the spirit of St. Francis, Gandhi, Dorothy Day and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we have persistently invited people everywhere to walk the path of nonviolence. Now Campaign Nonviolence is taking this work further . . the annual Campaign Nonviolence National Week of Action, where every September we mobilize across the country and around the world for a culture of peace, economic equality, racial justice and environmental healing.”

There was also a very broad mobilization this year in France, thanks to the efforts of Mouvement de la Paix which was responsible for half of the 144 actions in Europe. To quote from their website, as translated by CPNN, “The Mouvement de la Paix acts for the disarmament, in particular nuclear, but also against the production and the transfers of armaments, for the reduction of the military budgets. Made up of close to 150 committees spread all over France and forming links with international peace organizations, the Mouvement de la Paix intends to propose initiatives around the 8 constituent points of the international decade (UN – UNESCO) of the promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence:
1. Strengthening a culture of peace through education,
2. Promoting sustainable economic and social development,
3. Promoting respect for all human rights,
4. Measures to ensure equality between women and men,
5. Measures to promote participation in democratic life,
6. Measures to develop understanding, tolerance and solidarity,
7. Measures to support participatory communication and the free flow of information and knowledge,
8. Measures to promote international peace and security.”

In the rest of the world, unlike North America and Europe, people are suffering from wars and armed conflicts, and that is where we find the most remarkable mobilizations for the International Day of Peace.

In Latin America, there were actions in Colombia in order to strengthen the peace agreement that put an end to decades of war and suffering. Especially remarkable was the fashion show in Bogota by former FARC guerillas who have turned from the gun to the sewing machine and who paraded on the catwalk with placards calling for implementation of the peace agreement. In Medellin it was a local bar that took the lead for for workshops and sporting events to support the agreement. In Tumaco it was a theatrical play and in Valleduopar a photo exhibition.

In the Ex-Soviet countries, the majority of the 54 actions took place across the two sides of the armed coflict in the Ukraine. There were poignant cries from both sides by mothers and children calling for an end to the violence and separation. Let us hope that their cries are heard and lead to peace!. In the East at Rovenka, “To the sound of the “Bells of Peace” the children stood in a circle and joined hands. . .  Together, they made a wish that the war would end in the Donbass.” “In Avdeevka, which has repeatedly come under fire, where they still hear gunshots and heal wounds (there are still a lot of houses destroyed and damaged by shelling), there is a special relationship to World Peace Day. It was expressed yesterday by students of school No. 7. . . who made paper doves, wrote what they would do for peace and and also arranged a dance flash mob on the street.” In the West in Kvasilovsky, “All those present had tears in their eyes as they watched the children . . . reach out to us adults: “I want peace! I don’t want to hear the word “war”! “..

In Africa 9 of the 53 actions took place in the Democratic Republic of the Congo which continues to suffer from decades of local wars. In Beni “While peace is celebrated in other countries of the world, here we celebrate assassinations, massacres, looting.” In Kananga “Since we are in the citizen movement fighting for change during or after the atrocities of kamwina nsapu we never stop to launch the message of peace, carry out awareness campaigns, participate in various broadcasts of radio stations to call the people who had the weapons in their hands to lay them down and make peace.” And in Sud Kivu “The International Day of Peace is celebrated while a climate of insecurity is maintained by the presence of armed groups that sow terror and desolation in South Kivu and throughout the eastern part of the DRC.”

As for the Arab states and the Middle East, in the face of a terrible ongoing war in their country, the International Day of Peace was celebrated in three cities of Yemen: Aden, Hadramaout and Taiz. In the latter young art students produced drawings with “writings expressing peace, coexistence, brotherhood, tolerance, expressions calling for dialogue and tolerance among all sects, parties and groups, giving priority to the interest of the nation, renouncing sectarianism and violence, and calling on all to work together for lasting peace . . .to deliver a message that Taiz, despite its siege and war, is still a city that loves life, art and beauty and is still a city of love, coexistence and peace.” Other actions were carried out to celebrate the recent peace accords in Sudan and to consolidate peace in Syria.

In Asia and the Pacific, the Day was not dedicated to the resolution of conlicts and tensions such as those in Afghanistan, Kashmir, Myanmar and Korea, but in China the massacre of Nanjing, which took place durig the Japanese invasion of 1937 continues to be commemorated, this year by a concert of peace songs by the choir “Zi Jincao.”

To conclude, we have emphasized here the aspects of the International Day of Peace that contribute to the consciousness needed for an eventual transition from the culture of war to a culture of peace.

Europe: International Day of Peace

FREE FLOW OF INFORMATION

A survey by CPNN

We list here 144 actions in 21 European countries that were listed in Google during the week of September 21-28 under the key words “International Day of Peace”, “Journée Internationale de la Paix”, “Dia Internacional de Paz”, “Dia Internacional da Paz” and “”Internationaler Tag des Friedens” or were listed on the websites of International Cities of Peace Facebook and UN event map for the International Day of Peace.

In addition to these, over 300 actions are listed on the maps of One Day One Choir and Montessori schools singing for peace, but there is no indication which took place this year and which took place only in previous years.

No doubt there were also many actios listed on the Internet in the various national languages in Europe other than those for which we searched.

Many cities and towns in France, like Nevers in this photo, were mobilized by Mouvement de la Paix.

Here are excerpts from articles about the actions, many of them translated by CPNN:

EUROPE :

Statement by High Representative / Vice-President Federica Mogherini on the occasion of the International Day of Peace (translation from French by CPNN)
“On this International Day of Peace, the European Union reaffirms its commitment to peace and security, human rights and sustainable development for all, international cooperation and the rule-based international order, of which the United Nations is the pillar. Lasting peace has always been and will remain at the heart of the European Union’s external action, as reaffirmed in the Global Strategy. Around the world, the EU participates in prevention, peacebuilding, conflict and crisis resolution and stabilization through regional and international partnerships. . . . This year, the International Day of Peace focuses on the fight against climate change as an essential component of the protection and promotion of peace around the world. For more than a decade, the EU has been working to raise awareness and address the interdependence of climate, peace and security. Today, as young people around the world mobilize to save our planet, it is more urgent than ever to take action.”

EUROPE :

2019 Statement on the occasion of the International Day of Peace by the Conference of European Regional Legislative Assemblies
“We do not need to reach far back in terms of time or evocative power to recall the reasons which led to the European Union being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The constant effort on the part of the European Union for Peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights, was and still is a distinctive feature of the community of European peoples.. . .
On the occasion of the Day of Peace, CALRE considers it fundamental to reiterate the following points:
1. A peace-making process, from a social policy standpoint, should focus on the men and women who constitute the many European communities . . .
2. A new approach to social cohesion to which the European Union is called upon to contribute, in the same spirit with which its strength was acknowledged as an instrument for Peace in the continent and worldwide. Most importantly, this is a grass-roots commitment: it starts from those associations, organisations and movements which at the same time accept, condensate and express – by amplifying it on the public political arena – the resonance of the democratic spirit which underlies European cooperation.
3. A sign of global civilization that the need for European communities to become bearers of a message of peace becomes clear, a message which needs to focus on human beings as citizens and as a sign of Peace. Peace not just among peoples, but rather as a more deeply rooted, more direct peace: a peace of European citizens who actively contribute to safeguarding democracy, human rights and social welfare.
4. This community spirit should remain alive among the peoples of Europe, in order to promote the legacy of the founding fathers of our Union, to reap the fruits of the efforts made in the final years of the last century after conflicts which ravaged the continent; it should be aware of the need to work together for social and economic stability in Europe, thus offering our children a Continent which enhances merit, gives value to cooperation and integration, fosters the global relevance of civil societies. Our Europe needs to be a living instrument of Peace, safeguarding and giving dignity to Peoples and Communities in Europe an internationally: a Peaceful Europe which leaves nobody behind.

FRANCE :

The fight against climate change also involves nuclear disarmament
Eight organizations (see below) launch an appeal for the International Day of Peace, celebrated each year on September 21.
“. . . The goal of eliminating nuclear weapons is therefore inseparable from climate ambition. It would therefore be essential for the future Citizen’s Convention for the climate to be able to discuss it. It would be useful for his reflection to focus on the 37 billion euros devoted to the modernization of nuclear weapons in the current military programming law, which could be useful for financing the major investments that a policy to combat global warming will require. The Convention should also propose that France signal its determination to put an end to the arms race and to relaunch the multilateral process of nuclear disarmament, including by supporting the Nuclear Weapons Treaty already signed by many countries in the world. In the short term, the events organized as part of the International Day of Peace should make it one of their priority themes.”
The signatories
Abolition of Nuclear Weapons – House of Vigilance,
Green Cross France and Territories,
ICAN France,
IDN – Intiatives for Nuclear Disarmament,

The Southern Africa Youth Forum (SAYoF), a regional platform for youth and youth organizations in SADC countries, today joins the world in celebrating the United Nations International Day of Peace. This year’s theme, “Climate Action for Peace” comes at a time when SAYoF has just launched an initiative: “SADC Youth Negotiators Program on Climate Change”, as well as young people taking the lead in the region on the global climate strike, to campaign for climate justice. This year’s theme draws attention to the importance of the fight against climate change as a means to protect and promote lasting peace around the world. Climate change poses clear threats to international peace and security, and global climate emergencies pose a threat to security and stability. . . . It is in this context that as young people of SADC, we are committed to peace. On the basis of the horrible recent xenophobic events that have occurred in South Africa, we must work together for peace and unity. We must not miss the opportunity to achieve peace. Peace is necessary for the social or economic progress of our region. Peace also depends on the establishment of social and economic equality through a sound political system that faithfully serves the legitimate interests of all its citizens.
We therefore note that, on this day, young people are the engine of development and the peaceful existence of the region. In line with this year’s theme, SADC must engage youth in sustainable initiatives and as agents of change to mitigate climate change, reduce global warming, and play a leading role in raising awareness and building climate change. a lasting peace.
