30th edition of the Arab Jamboree: A delegation of the Algerian Muslim Scouts in Alexandria
un articulo por El Moudjahid

A delegation of 40 Algerian Scouts went to Egypt on Wednesday (August 25) to take part in Arab jamboree planned in Alexandria under the slogan "Scouting, a way of life." The participation of the Algerian delegation to jamboree which will last until September 2, aims to highlight the performance of Algerian Scouts while exchanging experiences and evaluating its action compared to other Arab delegations. This was stated by the commandant général of the Algerian Muslim Scouts (SMA), Mr. Noureddine Benbraham during a ceremony shortly before the departure of the delegation.

This meeting is an "opportunity to strengthen the bonds of friendship and brotherhood among the young Arab scouts, to encourage dialogue about issues and challenges affecting them and to instill a culture of peace and mutual understanding, said Mr. Benbraham. It is also an opportunity to discover the rich cultural heritage of Egypt, he further said. The program of the jamboree, which takes place during the centenary of the Scout Movement, includes conferences on various issues related to youth in the Arab world, as well as science competitions, entertainment, and sports sessions.

Taking part in this jamboree, organized by the General Union of Scouts and Mourchidates (Girl Guides) of Egypt, in collaboration with the Arab Organization of Scouting, are delegations from 20 Arab countries.

In addition, the commandant général of the SMA said that the Algerian Scouts are preparing for the 27th Arab conference to be held in Algiers in May 2013 under the slogan "Scouting and effective citizenship."

Two movements: scouting and culture of peace, Are they related?

Comentario más reciente: :

The relationship between scouting and the culture of peace goes back to the 1990's when I was at the UNESCO Culture of Peace Programme and we established a working relationship with the World Organization of Scouting based in Geneva, Switzerland.

We conducted culture of peace training for scouts through the Council of Europe and established an agreement which included the development of a scouting branch of the culture of peace news network (CPNN).  At one point we sent a trainer to the World Scout Jamboree held in Chile to train scouts as CPNN moderators.  CPNN was represented at the academic meeting in Geneva in 2007 to celebrate the 100 years of scouting (see The role of Scouting and the coming generation in the historic transformation from the culture of war to a culture of peace).

The scouts of Algeria and Korea were especially active in distributing and getting over a million signatures on the Manifesto 2000 commitment to practice a culture of peace in everyday life.

Scouting organizations in Algeria and Argentina reported their work for a culture of peace in the World Report for the Culture of Peace in 2005 and 2010 for the International Decade for a Culture of Peace and  Nonviolence for the Children of the World.

Recently CPNN has carried articles on scouting initiatives for culture of peace in Senegal, Iceland and Algeria.
