Good news: Destruction of Syria's Chemical Weapons
un articulo por Keith Hindell, UNA UK, London & South East Region

I attach a notice of meeting which will be held in the UK Parliament in June to describe, explain and discuss the destruction of Syria's Chemical Weapons. This meeting is sponsored by the All Party Parliamentary Groups for the United Nations and for Global Security and Non-Proliferation and is organised by the London & South East region of the United Nations Association.

The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons acting with a mandate from the United Nations Security Council is removing and destroying Syria’s stockpile of Chemical Weapons, their chemical precursors and the production facilities, in a careful operation lasting months. It now looks as if this operation will be complete by the end of that month.

Both the technical and security problems involved are formidable and require the cooperation of many nations, including the UK, as well as Syria itself. This is the first time such weapons have been deliberately de-activated in the middle of a war. If completed it will be a remarkable achievement for the OPCW,for diplomacy and for the international community.

Consequently it looks as if this will be the only good news to come out of the Syrian civil war so far. Previous agreements for bringing in humanitarian supplies to besieged areas appear to have collapsed.

I realise that chlorine and other gases are still being used in barrel bombs and that the Syrian government may still have some hidden chemical arsenal but nevertheless if the OPCW completes its mission safely it will be a success for the international community.

I suggest therefore you start a discussion about this topic and use the above poster or part of it as a means of kicking it off. The United Nations Association of the UK is at least concerned about this issue.
