Prizes for the Promotion of Culture of Peace and School Coexistence

The Ministry of Education has granted the Prizes for Promotion of Culture of Peace and School Coexistence. This year they have been awarded to eight Andalusian schools that have contributed to the promotion of culture of peace, to the improvement of school life and to a peaceful, negotiated resolution of conflicts. The Minister of Education of Granada, Francisco Alvarez de la Chica, has chaired the ceremony of the third edition of these awards, coinciding with the commemoration of the School Day of Non-Violence and Peace.

The winning schools are:
The first prize has been awarded to the Colegio de Infantil y Primaria Andalucía de Granada and the Instituto de Educación Secundaria Averroes de Córdoba; the second prize to the Colegio Nuestra Señora de los Remedios de Santo Tomé (Jaén) and the instituto Señora María del Águila de El Ejido (Almería); and the third prize to the Institutos Fernando Quiñones de Chiclana de la Frontera (Cádiz) y Concha Méndez de Torremolinos (Málaga). Also an honorable mention has been awarded to the Colegio Santa Teresa de Jesús de Fuentes de Andalucía (Sevilla) and the Instituto de Educación Secundaria El Andévalo de Puebla de Guzmán (Huelva).

During the Asian Educators Symposium, we found out that Peace Education is still not part of the school curriculum in most countries. However, the participating teachers have been incorporating peace education in their teaching subjects, such as English, social studies, and character education. We all agreed that love and the will to nurture peace in children are the most important basis for peace education. Even if peace education is not a part of the curriculum, peace can be taught through any subject. Whatever you are teaching, if it comes from the heart, then it will touch the minds of children.
