Art for Peace - Multimedia Edition / 2008
un articulo por Regina Proença

Celebrating the Sixth Annual Gandhi Week, organized by Iluminattis - Center of Philosophical Studies and Cultural Space Saber Viver we have the fifth edition of the project ART FOR PEACE – Multimedia Edition.

We are very proud to say at the other editions the number of artists that participated and the great number of visitors at our site overcame all our expectations. We then decided to open this reflection and opportunity to different kinds of fields. This year we are going to have a multimedia edition with distinct categories of work, such as music, photos, drawings, clips, documentary, etc.

This exhibition, as the first edition that happened in October 2004, is a posthumous tribute to a great illustrator Hermes Tadeu Moraes, cowardly murdered in 2003 during a robbery attempted at Praia Grande/SP/Brazil. But far beyond the tribute, we created a channel of expression and reflection about the serious problem of violence that we face in all spheres of society.

The 2004 Exhibition attracted about 40 artists from many states, both amateurs and professionals, including illustrations, comic cartoons, cartoons and strips. The success of the first Exhibition was so big that the artists suggested the Exhibition to become an annual event in the city.

The idea, from this year on, is to extend the possibility for Brazilians and foreign artists to participate in this event. It is important to emphasize that it is not a contest. The goal is to awake the critical conscience of people about the world problems. It will not to be offered any award in money but the selected works will get gifts such as CDs, DVDs, T-shirts and books.

During the year and during the month of October 2008 we will show all the works at our site and institution, also at different cultural spots in different cities, remembering that all the works will be available on a virtual edition and can be shared and visited by thousand of people that can create their own exhibitions.

Join us and help the world to be a better place! To send your work you need to check the rules and deadlines, the theme chosen is a reflection of what we believe “Be the Peace”. Quoting Gandhi´s words “We must be the change we want to see in the world”. Yes, the arts do create a basis for a culture of peace.
The question I would raise is where are the visual artists who have produced a Guernica like painting of Felluja? Paintings last longer than photographs which are too often fleeting.
Do the poets against the war meet annually?
I caught a bit of an interesting tv show which featured world class artists such as Wole Soyinka speaking in Israel/Palestine about ways to further the peace movement there. Did anyone else see the entire show?
I hope a local Peace Day could emulate the UN opening ceremony .
