Amos Oz: Israeli Peace Movement
un articulo por Julie Friedlander

On Tuesday November 30, the Israeli author, Amos Oz, spoke at the 92nd St. Y in NYC. Oz has been a major contributor in his writing and activism to promoting peace. Oz brought to the audience the story of his life as described in more detail in his most recently published memoir A Tale of Love and Darkness. As he shares his story it becomes evident that it is not just a personal tale but one that truly reflects the state of modern Israel. Although Oz usually speaks on his view of the conflict, he spoke more at the event about his own family and the troubles they have endured.

As stated on the Internet, “Amos Oz has published many articles and essays about the Israeli/Arab conflict and has been an outspoken advocate for an Israeli/Palestinian compromise based on mutual recognition and co-existence between Israel and a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza. He has been one of the leading figures in the Israeli 'Peace Now' movement since 1977, and his speeches and articles appear in translation throughout the world.”

Amos Oz is a key contributor to the endorsement of the above-mentioned idea of compromised based not only upon his own personal beliefs but a strong backing of experience. Oz is highly qualified to speak on the issue of peace as someone who has engaged in war. He fought on the Sinai front during the 1967 Six Day War, and on the Golan Heights in the October 1973 Yom Kippur War (see web page His personal history and his work for peace are truly unique and valuable as he has made such a remarkable contribution to the speaking on behalf of the Israeli Peace Movement.

People like Amos Oz are very encouraging as well as strong speakers because of their experiences.  When people who have actually participated and experienced war speak out, their voices are so much more powerful because they have witnessed it first hand.  "Knowledge is power" truly applies to these advocates.
