Peace Mechanisms at Santorini Biennale 2014
un articulo por Kikos Papadopoulos

The Organizing Committee of the Santorini Biennale is going to organize the 2nd Biennale, from July 05 2014 to October 05 2014, under the theme «Peace Mechanisms» aiming to study the harmony between people, the mutual understanding and the respect of differences. Peace and War have been the subject of debate for thousands of years in many countries, cultures and philosophies and both of them have led to serious moral questions.

Political systems have always viewed Peace as a state of balance and harmony between individuals and populations in which respect means acceptance of differences, in which conflicts are resolved through dialogue, in which people’s rights are respected and their voices are heard and everyone is at their highest point of serenity, bearing always in mind that systems usually consider warfare as an inevitable and integral aspect for the creation of human culture (which is also inevitable under certain socio-cultural or ecological circumstances!).

The Santorini Biennale, is calling artists to study and explore causations and reasons countries are guided very often to violent actions (crisis – conflict – war development), and how the arts can create “a mechanism” against them.

Artworks are being solicited in the following categories:
- Painting
- Architecture, Architectural Projects
- Industrial Design
- Photography
- Sculpture
- Drawing, Graphic, Illustration
- Cinema
- Installation Art
- Ceramic Art
- Paper Art
- Literature
- Poetry
- Gastronomy

The registration deadline is 10 April 2014. See the Santorini Biennale website for more information.

Comentario más reciente: :

Yes, the arts do create a basis for a culture of peace.
The question I would raise is where are the visual artists who have produced a Guernica like painting of Felluja? Paintings last longer than photographs which are too often fleeting.
Do the poets against the war meet annually?
I caught a bit of an interesting tv show which featured world class artists such as Wole Soyinka speaking in Israel/Palestine about ways to further the peace movement there. Did anyone else see the entire show?
I hope a local Peace Day could emulate the UN opening ceremony .
