Belém hosts First Culture of Peace Encounter (Brazil)

Diffusing the culture of peace and best practices
in restorative justice and conflict mediation,
through implementation of the National Socio-
Educational Service, are some of the goals of the
First Meeting of the Culture of Peace, Restorative
Justice and Conflict Mediation in Belem , which
begins on Thursday, November 21 and runs until
Friday, November 22 .

The event also celebrates the anniversary of the
Convention on the Rights of the Child, which was
adopted by the UN General Assembly on November 20,
1989 for which Brazil is a signatory. For two
days, experts, scholars, representatives from the
judiciary, prosecution and Public Defender,
teenagers, university and community leaders will
participate in conferences, panels, reports of
experiences and workshops. They will show step-
by-step how to implement a Culture of Peace in
practice through the dissemination of the values
of non-violence and actions such as mediation and
restorative practices that seek positive
resolution of conflicts and crimes involving
teenagers (see CPNN article of 7
October).
The meeting also aims to sensitize the local media
to the topic, through panels, conferences and
exchanges of experiences that emphasize the
construction of a Culture of Peace. Among
facilitators of the event will be Izabela Jatene,
Atílio Alvarez, Flavio Mesquita, Egberto Penido,
Eliana Penedo and Suzana Varjão.
During the event there will be the launch of the
magazine Restorative Dialogue , published by Tdh
Brazil, an international NGO working in Brazil for
30 years for the socialization of children and
adolescents, with an emphasis on Restorative
Justice and Conflict Mediation both in Brazil and
Worldwide. The publication features articles from
several national experts on Juvenile Restorative
Justice, both in the Criminal Justice System and
in schools and communities. The publication
includes a rich debate about different ways to
conceive juvenile restorative justice and to
develop its potential as a complementary tool to
traditional justice in our country
The meeting is organized by the Government of the
State of Pará, Brazil Tdh and the United Nations
Fund for Children (UNICEF) , and will include
representatives from the Juvenile Justice System,
Social Welfare, Education and Public Safety
sectors, as well as universities, NGOs, churches,
community institutions, lawyer, legal and public
policy counselors, Guardianship Councils,
journalists and other actors involved in the
Systems of Justice and Civil Rights.
The First Culture of Peace Encounter will take
place 21 and 22 November, 2013, in the Hangar -
Convention Center of the Amazon. It is a free
event, but places are limited. Registration is
free and should be done on days 5-20 of November,
since there will be only 120 places available.
