La Niwano Peace Foundation entregará el 31 Niwano
Peace Prize a Dena Merriam, fundadora y líder de la
Global Peace Initiative of Women, en reconocimiento
a sus contribuciones a la humanidad en búsqueda de
la sabiduría y por un mundo más justo y sostenible.

Una ceremonia de presentación de premios tendrá
lugar en Tokio el 16 de mayo. Además de un
certificado de premios, Merriam recibirá una medalla
y 20 millones de yenes.
Una pionera en el movimiento interreligioso desde
finales de los noventa cuando fue vicepresidenta
de la Millennium World Peace Summit of Religious
and Spiritual Leaders celebrada en Naciones Unidas
en Nueva York, Merriam fundó la Global Peace
Initiative of Women (GPIW) en 2002 para reunir a
un grupo multi-religioso de mujeres líderes
espirituales. La GPIW ha impulsado diálogos en
Israel/Palestina, Irak, Sudán, Afganistán y otros
países mientras desarrollaban un programa de
liderazgo global para los líderes de la comunidad
joven en asociación con Naciones Unidas.
Al elegir a Merriam como receptora para 2014, el
Peace Prize Committee dijo que es un "líder global
en reunir las voces y energía de mujeres que están
inspiradas por su fe para que formen
verdaderamente el núcleo de un movimiento global
sin precedentes", dijo. Merriam "trabaja
incansablemente para asegurar que las perspectivas
de las religiones orientales y occidentales se
reúnen en un sabio equilibrio ", dijo el Comité.
El Niwano Peace Prize se estableció en 1983 para
reconocer y animar a las personas y organizaciones
que han contribuido significativamente al
entendimiento inter-religioso y la cooperación,
contribuyendo a la causa de la paz mundial. Para
evitar un énfasis indebido en cualquier religión o
región en concreto, se solicitan nominaciones de
unas 600 personas y organizaciones, representando
a 125 países. El premio recibe el nombre en honor
al fundador y primer presidente de la organización
budista Rissho Kosei-kai, Nikkyo Niwano.
La Niwano Peace Foundation se constituyó en 1978
para contribuir a la realización de la paz mundial
y la mejora de una cultura de paz. La fundación
promueve la investigación y otras actividades
basadas en un espíritu religioso, y sirve a la
causa de la paz en campos como la educación, la
ciencia, la religión y la filosofía.
