Students from the suburbs of São Paulo go on stage to promote the culture of peace
un article par Panorama Brasil (abridged)

"Nothing is all wrong or without quality. Everything is human and very different. We all are people. Each has his own that that's not bad. Diversity is what's cool. "This rap produced by high school students of a public school of São Paulo is an example of how the discourse of tolerance is seen differently in 27 schools of the city. The 430 students who participated in the second edition of the Dialogue Theatre Project presented their project on Wednesday in the neighborhood of Redondo Capon. It was sponsored by the Instituto Sou da Paz as part of their culture of peace activities.

"To change the violence that is out there, we can get strted in here. Everyone passes through school, and what we learn here stays with us forever, "said the 3rd year student Reifra Araujo, 17. He presented the play "Diversity is Cool" along with classmates from the Republic of Panama State School of Jardim São Luís, also in the southern part of the city.

The project, which began in schools from the central, north and west regions of the city, has now arrived in neighborhoods of high violence. "Historically, this region [the southern] remains the one where the most people die," said Cainan Baladez, project coordinator with the Dialogue Theater. This edition brings together the communities of Paraisópolis, Capão Redondo, Jardim Ângela, and Jardim São Luís. The presentations take place in the Unified Educational Center of Capão Redondo.

The Instituto Sou da Paz, which heads up the initiative in partnership with the Ministry of Education, believes that the school is the best place to address the issue of violence. "The school is one of the first large spaces where we learn to live together. Of course, there is conflict, but it should be seen as natural and expected. We have the opportunity to discuss how to resolve these issues in the form of peaceful dialogue," explained Ricardo Melo, coordinator of conflict prevention of the institute.

Students were instructed by 48 teachers-mediators who participated in 12 training meetings with project coordination. Upon returning to school, they presented the proposal to the students to discuss and format a theatrical scene on the theme of culture of peace. "To talk of peace, they end up using everyday examples of violence," explains Professor Silvana Kruz Braga, who led the work at the Republic of Panama school.

Swearing, fights, gossip, disrespect among peers and teachers and cell phone use were some of the issues raised by students in their skits. The class of Andressa Karoline Souza, 17, chose a topic that affects especially the new generation: cyberbullying [using the Internet to harass or act in a hostile manner against colleagues]. "We experience this problem at our school and wanted to show it in the play. It's a way to tell the story directly and explain how it all happened, "said Andressa. . . .
