GLOBAL MOVEMENT FOR A CULTURE OF PEACE

Dear CPNN readers and reporters,

Although the UN Decade for a Culture of Peace ended in 2010, the culture of peace is more than ever on the agenda of the United Nations.

As the United Nations General Assembly begins its new session, it hosted two major events for the culture of peace at its headquarters in New York, one on September 14 and the other on September 21. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon spoke at both events, and his remarks at the second event are summarized in a CPNN article. Another CPNN article describes the first event, which was dedicated to implementation of the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace adopted by the General Assembly in 1999 to define a culture of peace and provide a roadmap for achieving it through a global movement for a culture of peace. Both events were well-attended by ambassadors and representatives of the various countries of the UN, and another article summarizes some of their remarks.

UNESCO, which originally proposed the culture of peace to the UN during the 90s, returned to it as a priority in its General Conference last fall. In line with this, UNESCO sponsored the event at the UN on September 21 mentioned above, and UNESCO is organizing a series of culture of peace forums in Africa, the first of which took place in Abidjian.

UNESCO is also supports many initiatives related to culture of peace such as: the International Leadership Forum at the University of Connecticut; the Forum on Science, Techonology and Innovation for Sustainable Development; and the International Essay Contest for Young People promoting a culture of peace and sustainable development.

The United Nations continues to honor and disseminate the words and actions of peace heroes. The UN honored Nelson Mandela Day on July 18, and a new UNESCO institute is being dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi.

Another UN initiative, the Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), includes a Youth Solidarity Fund which CPNN has long been associated with. In recent months the UNAOC has announced a youth event at the 5th UNAOC Forum and a Youth Summer School in Portugal.
