JCYCN Campaign against Human Rights Violations in Nepal

Civil society organizations including JCYCN [Jagriti
Child and Youth Concern Nepal] launched a
nationwide campaign against caste-based
discrimination and untouchability, in coordination
with other 44 organizations from August 2012.
Under the campaign there were several activities
like conferences and workshops with civil society
activists, human rights defenders, professional,
media etc. We organized several coordination
meetings with other partners and organizers during
the preparation period to make the campaign a
grand success. A team of 25 campaigners, both from
Dalit and Non-Dalit community joined the journey
from Ilam (Far Eastern) to Kanchanpur (Far
Western) and crossed 34 districts throughout
Nepal. They traveled 5000 kilometer during the
campaign. Hon. Kedar Nath Upadhya, Chairperson of
National human Rights Commission, inaugurated the
campaign on August 12, 2012. During the campaign,
campaigners in coordination with local organizers
organized common feasts among dalits and non-
dalits, felicitated inter caste-couples, street
drama, cultural programs, interaction programs,
talk shows and other programs of social awareness.

The continue violation against women like; rape,
sexual assault, and domestic violence in various
forms in Nepal still remained a serious issue.
This has been proved by the report published
recently by INSEC [Informal Sector
Service Centre], the human right organization.
The report says the total 910 incidents haven
recorded by INSEC during documentation in regard
to violation against women. The government in
Nepal has a shocking record of broken promises on
human rights and justice.
Peace process, sustainability of Human Rights for
all Nepalese and to take decisive action against
impunity and make justice a priority, is the
compulsory duty of government.
Today’s Situation of Human Rights in Nepal if we
have to look from bird eye view, seriously we
must say Nepal’s government have failed to take
significant steps toward numerous human rights
violation happened in its territory . The Human
Rights Watch had also analyzed in its annual World
Report 2013 that Nepal’s government has failed to
take significant steps toward numerous human
rights violation. Still various Pushing Factors
are leading Nepalese society, which is a serious
cause for Human Right violation and the most
serious causes are Poverty, Corruption,
Unemployment, Gender Discrimination, Lack of
Proper Education, Lack of Democratic culture and
Ethnic Discrimination. In 2012 the Nepal
governments have ignored its human rights
obligations built into the 2006 Comprehensive
Peace Accord. At least 13,000 people were killed
and over 1,600 became victims of “disappearances”
during the decade-long conflict from 1996-2006
between government forces and Maoist rebels.
Instead of seeking justice for serious abuses, the
government has consistently promoted to senior
positions officials and military officers linked
to serious rights violations, which are one of the
shameless histories of our country for upcoming
generation. Addressing an interaction program
organized on August 30, 2012 to mark the
International Day of the Disappeared (2012),
chairperson justice of National Human Right
Commission Kedar Nath Upadhya said that there are
still around 1400 disappearance citizens.
