National Peace Academy - 2012 Update

All of us at the National Peace Academy thank CPNN and its readers for your support and encouragement in these early years of development. You will be pleased to know that our National Certificate Program is fully up and running (all pilot courses over the past three semesters ran well and at break even or better!) and we are offering thirteen courses in the first half of 2012 as we formally introduce the NPA Certificate Program.

We recently established a formal partnership with the Peace and Justice Studies Association (PJSA), the leading professional organization for peace and justice academics, activists and educators in North America. Tony Jenkins, NPA Director of Education, is overseeing the exploration of a joint positive peace research project with PJSA that will serve the field well.
Many of our Peacebuilding Peacelearning Intensive alums have their projects up and running in various stages of development. You can read about some of their stories on our website now and we encourage you to hear from them directly by participating in our first Peacebuilding Peacelearning Conference in Boulder, Colorado from February 17-19 (focused on ecology).
Other programs and activities are also keeping us busy. The International Institute on Peace Education (IIPE) is shaping up beautifully. In its 30th anniversary year the IIPE will be taking place in August 2012 in Hiroshima, Japan. Our popular Peacebuilder Teleconference Dialogue series will continue in 2012 and first up is Rinaldo Brutoco, Founder and President of the World Business Academy on February 7th! We are also active in the Global Alliance for Ministries and Infrastructures for Peace, joining our colleagues from over 40 countries, and peace academies and learning institutions in Costa Rica, Canada, Nepal, Rwanda, Romania, and more.
As our focus on right relationship continues to yield positive feedback and great results, we are so very grateful be on the journey with you. All best wishes for a healthy and happy New Year. We look forward to the wise and steady anchoring and expression of the National Peace Academy in the USA.

We teach the science of war on an even and equal basis with the 3Rs and we maintain it with more resources than any other school. Further, we have done this consistently for a couple of thousand years, long before education was institutionalized for all children. And we have never questioned the wisdom of teaching millions of civilians how to kill while never giving the same credence, or any for that matter, to the science of peace, the study of anti-war, of reconciliation. With this inured mindset leaders choose to fund boot camps and officer training colleges and by omission deprive youth of the better choice.
If we can teach war and violence with such commitment to suit the purposes of generals and the arms trade, where are the rest of us who have a greater need for peace and conciliation than anyone anywhere has for the killing fields? Why have civilians not demanded peace education long ago and why don't we have it now?
