Olivia Tavares, the pedagogical specialist of SEE,
who presented the project, explained in detail the
importance of proper implementation of training
mediators to work in schools in the state system .
"Conflicts are part of human nature , and the
problem is when they result in violent behavior .
So we will deploy all stages of mediation ,
training and ensuring proper implementation within
schools," she said.
Olivia explained that among the principles of
conflict mediation are the credibility of the
mediator and the freedom and empowerment of the
parties concerned. "The mediator needs to be a
person who is willing to help in conflict by
promoting dialogue. If the conflict is resolved,
it must mean that both parties have won. The
important thing is that there is no competition,"
emphasized the specialist.
This action also aims to promote social inclusion
and peace. The intention is to try to transform the
person in conflict into a mediator, assigning
responsibility , and and making him or her a leader
for good.
According to the Secretary of State for the
Promotion of Peace, Adalberon Sá Junior, the
collaboration of the two departments is crucial to
advance the culture of peace within the challenging
context of the school environment .
"The only way to change our culture is through
education. What we want is to solve the problem
of violence through prevention measures. The
school is a strategic environment where a new
approach can be developed that can can be
reproduced in adulthood," says the Secretary.
Also, according to Adalberon, Sepaz has already
developed work with community mediation, and the
hope is that the actions within the school reflect
these activities .
"In future , we want to reach all schools.
Secretary Josicleide Moura is enthusiastic about
this project and supports its expansion," he
added. "When we deploy mediation in school, we
promote reflection and action. This is very
objective," he emphasized.
Next Steps: After the conclusion of the meeting ,
the school management was asked to draw up a list
of people from the school community, including
students , faculty, staff and parents, who could
work as mediators. On January 14th begins the
first training class of mediators of the project.
The course will discuss the most appropriate way
to implement the mediation of conflict , and
promote itsdynamic . The activities will be
conducted by Olivia Tavares and the second class
is already scheduled with the date of February 20.
According to Kainara Jatoba, coordinator of the
action, the secretaries will follow the whole
process, from training to deployment at schools.
"We let the managers decide how many mediators
they deem necessary . Each unit has its own
peculiarities, some with more demands, others
less. What we want is that the mediation project
is successful in the schools and that it minimizes
the number of conflicts among the youth."
