Peace March, 11 August, Biterrois (France)
un article par Bézier Section, French Communist Party

Every year since 2000, the pacifist collective of Biterrois has organized a peace march to commemorate the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945.

The militant pacifists wish to make people conscious of the risk to humanity posed by the nuclear arms race which has continued despite the Non- proliferation Treaty that has been signed by many countries including the major nuclear powers.

It is also the occasion to reflect on the present- day problems of peace and disarmament. The pacifists denounce the unreasonable spending on the works of death rather than the real needs of life. They demand that the International Decade of Culture of Peace and Non-violence should not rest vain words. In fact, the question of peace is inseparable from those of justice and development.

Each year the pacifists of Biterrois seek a city to host their initiative, and this year it is the city of Péret that invited them to hold the 2013 edition of the Peace March which will take place there on August 11.

The march will start at 10:30 at the place de l'eglise and will follow a route for an hour and a half until reaching the city hall where they will be offered an aperitif. As is the tradition, the event will be completed with a picnic lunch.

"Forward march!"

Hi.

I have two comments about this report.  The first is on the question about the effectiveness of mass protest marches.

Recalling the effectiveness of mass protest marches in the 1978 Iranian Revolution, I looked it up on a search engine and found the following account of the revolution's climax"

"In November, the Shah turned the government into a military government in order to force strikers back to work. But the worst, everyone knew, was about to come. The month of Muhurram was approaching, the month in which Shi'ites traditionally celebrate the martyrdom of Husayn. It is a passionate and highly religious month, and since the protests against the Shah were largely religious in nature, everyone knew that the country was on the verge of exploding.

Muhurram began on December 2 with demonstrations, and these demonstrations would continue all throughout the month. They were massive, in the millions, and it was clear that the demonstrators, not the government, was in charge. . ... continuation.
