International Youth Meeting for the Culture of Peace
an article by Cedric Desmarais

I participated in the International Youth Meeting for the Culture of Peace that took place in France.from July 8-15 on the initiative of the Mouvement de la Paix. It was sponsored by the European Plan for Youth in Action and by the United Nations International Year of Youth.

Over a hundred young people of many different nationalities participated in the camp with its roundtables and workshops. After many discussions, we put together an International Appeal of Youth for a Culture of Peace. Also, we were able to organize a demonstration at the military base of Avord where French AWAX planes take off for the war in Libya and where they test weapons that use depleted uranium.

We worked on the basis of the 8 points of the culture of peace in our discussions and we came to appreciate our cultural differences in an atmosphere of friendship and camaraderie.

I invite you to visit the website of our meeting where you will find the full text of the Appeal as well as a synopsis of our activities: http://rij2011.wordpress.com/

The original Youth Report for a Culture of Peace is still worth reading as the initial inspiration for the Youth Solidarity Fund of the Alliance of Civilizations.  See http://decade-culture-of-peace.org/report/YouthReport.pdf.
