Peace Day Philly - USA

Video: Peace Day Philly

Peace Day Philly is a local initiative that promotes active participation in the United Nations International Day of Peace (“Peace Day”), a day of ceasefire and non-violence observed worldwide on September 21. The Peace Day Philly initiative welcomes organizations, neighborhoods, community groups, schools and individuals to participate in this global day by creating opportunities for peace, non-violence and greater unity in the Philadelphia region.

Personal, local and global levels of peace are interconnected – mindfulness and action in one area affects another area. We welcome Peace Day activities that involve or explore the interconnectedness of several levels of peace.

Through coming together on this globally observed day – to offer and participate in peace related programs and events, to share about ongoing peace work, to put forth frameworks for ongoing dialogue about peace and non-violence issues – we can nurture the seeds of peace and greater understanding that have an impact far beyond one day.

Peace Day Philly aligns with the sustained work of the United Nations and many NGOs across the world working to build a “Culture of Peace.” For more about this concept, please visit the Culture of Peace page of this section and read the AUGUST 2012 BLOG.

It is difficult to find extensive listings of the many events celebrating the International Day of Peace around the world.  An exception is the United Religions Initiative which lists events for the IDP 2014 by their affiliates in Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, Nigeria, Nepal, Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Bulgaria, Russia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, United States and the Philippines.
