So stated the Director of the Foundation, María Viñas Pich stating “the International Congress on Building Peace will aim to address from an academic perspective the foundations of peace, identifying the difficulties to be overcome as well as exploring the resources that the present must nurture to achieve it.”
She also said that the congress seeks to highlight the various initiatives and work carried out in various parts of the world that are an outstanding contribution to world peace. Similarly, it aims to share the ideas and input from experts on peace and conflict, both from academia and the organisations and entities that have spent years working in the field.
So far those who have confirmed their participation in the congress are the specialists John Paul Lederach, Enrique Dussel, Manuel Reyes Mate, Lü Longgen, Adela Cortina and Federico Mayor Zaragoza who will be responsible for the inaugural conference.
The congress began its work a year before with a pre-conference session involving the meeting of 6 groups of experts in various disciplines to address themes such as historical memory, the construction of identities, justice, peace studies and mediation, methods of communication and peace, and the qualitative leap of democracies.
The congress, Maria Viñas said, “is also a milestone in the journey of the Letter of Peace addressed to the UN Foundation, which since 1993 has worked in cities of more than 80 countries on five continents for the promotion of peace. But every effort is small in comparison with the challenges in the 21st century, especially the conflicts that affect social cohesion and integration. ”
The findings of the congress will be delivered to UN Secretary General during the closing ceremony.

Latest reader comment:
The peace movement can become stronger and more effective in two ways: recognizing peace movements in other countries such as Iraq this week, and in the US by continuing the momentum. On April 15th, several actions are planned reminding tax payers how much of their tax dollars go to fund the war machine, April 29, Bruce Gagnon's Global Network vs. Nuclear weapons in Space will meet in NYC, followed by the Mayors for Peace Non-Proliferation Treaty renewal rally in Central Park. And Jonathan Schell will be speaking at the West Hartford Town Hall on Tuesday April 12 at 7:00 p.m. He is one of the leading philosophers of the peace movement.
