Human Rights Training:The change in our minds
an article by Chansoknea Mao and Henok Gebeyehu
On the 5th of August, young leaders from around the world gathered together at University of Connecticut to discuss Human Right Issues.
Starting with the presentation of Dr. Amii Omara-Otunnu, UNESCO Chair, we were impressed with the concept of "Informed Empathy." His speech inspires us to put our ideal and imagination into practice. Followed by the presentation of Dr. Shyamala Raman, Professor of Economics and International Studies, Saint Joseph College, we
were impressed by her idea and critics of Milennium Development Goals (MDGs) of the United
Nation. Most importantly, the possibility that it disregards the human is something
new that we are acquainted with. It is very important and eye-opening that we
now realized the other side of the MDGs. So that way we can really work together
and achieve not only Economic Development but also the real development of the
human being.

Moreover,it was a blessing that we heard about the website of Culture of Peace by Dr. David Adams. It was an enlightenment and mental revolution. I was so touched when Dr. David said " Making peace
starts not with government but with our minds."
It changed my perception of peace making.
His approach to his talk is very interesting. Starting with the brain storming and then making a final point out of the whole discussion, made us feel that we were really attracted to the methodology of his presentation. This strategy
is very new to me that we have never thought of before. It changed our opinion and approach to peace. This is what it really means by education of Peace. And it is our commitment to take wherever we all belong and create a dialogue
with or societies.
Finally, we reached the point where we can document our commitment into a real resolution. It is our pleasure and honor to be part of this historical event.
