Declare Latin America an Arms-Free Zone
an article by Olive Branch

In the year 2008, Latin America spent 51 billion dollars in armaments. The area is plagued by poverty and this exorbitant sum would have been better spent on creating schools, providing health care, hiring teachers, giving land to poor farmers, helping farmers to diversify their crops, educating its population.

We are requesting the United Nations to put an embargo on the sale of arms to Latin America and declaring it an Arms-Free-Zone. At the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom in Costa Rica, we urgently need signatures on our petition.

Please take a few minutes to look up and sign our online petition.

Muchas Gracias.

It would be interesting to know the history of nuclear- and arms-free zones, and whether they work or not.  Does any reader know about this?
