Culture of Peace at the World Social Forum in Tunisia
an article by David Adams
The 2013 World Social Forum (WSF) will take place in Tunis from 26-30 March. It is the first WSF in the Arab World, which is especially important since the movements of the "Arab Spring" continue to reverberate throughout the region.

As readers of CPNN know, the WSF, which began in Brazil and has since been held in Kenya and India as well, has long been a gathering place for civil society organizations seeking "a better world" (For example, see CPNN articles of February 6, 2004 and February 6, 2009). Here are some of the events scheduled for Tunis that discuss the culture of peace. The title and some description in each case are translated into English from the original French, Spanish or Arabic.

At the Forum, almost everything touched on the culture of peace, although only a few speakers linked their talks to the UN initiative, prompting a leader of the French Peace movement to remark he was disappointed that the culture of peace was not better represented at the Forum. The response to CPNN was positive, but most people were unaware of its existence. Next time there should be culture of peace events, pins and t-shirts, as well as the CPNN cards and flyers that we gave out.
