GLOBAL MOVEMENT FOR A CULTURE OF PEACE

The UN Conference on Sustainable Development next June in Rio de Janeiro is shaping up to be one of the key events of 2012. The Conference will involve heads of state from around the world, although, given the lack of results in other such recent governmental conferences, it seems unlikely that they will make any great progress themselves. On the other hand, alongside the governmental conference, there will be a summit of civil society that can have a major impact on people's consciousness around the world. The article about involvement of the World Social Forum gives some idea of this potential, as does the synopsis of the website Rio+20.

The Rio+20 process promises to mobilize many different initiatives of the civil society. One such example is the Global Youth Music Contest whose winners will win a trip to the June event in Rio.

The Rio+20 process will also cause us to reflect on those positive initiatives that are underway for sustainable development. One such initiative is described this month in the CPNN Article A Great Green Wall Across the African Continent. The organization Eco Cidadao in Brazil has long been involved in the promotion of sustainable development as illustrated last month in their most recent article.
