Question: Shouldn't the US and Britain leave Iraq now? CPNN article: A New Century of Colonial War?

It’s been nearly a year since the United States and Britain attacked Iraq, and if they were barely tolerated in the Middle East then, they are truly hated now. Patrolling the streets with tanks and forcing entry into civilians’ homes has made the country into a police state, the United States especially, the oppressor. And they—Iraquis and Americans—will go on killing and maiming each other as long as this goes on.

Clearly, the US is not so capable at pacification at it is with tanks. In its state of enmity, the Middle East is becoming as dangerous to itself and the rest of the world as any other place on earth—among many. Bush should diplomatically move his war machine out and allow the experts in peace to correct the disorder before so much damage is done that an already volatile situation erupts.

And, Bush’s need to be there is over as it is now apparent that he has accomplished everything he privately meant to do. "He got him." (And we are left to wonder what he is doing to his archenemy, Saddam Hussein, and what he plans for the dictator’s future).

The U.S wants to construct a model 'liberal' state in Iraq, geared toward satisfiying all our political and economic needs in the Middle East. The argument is that, if we pull out now, there will just be a void waiting to be filled by fundamentalist islam, terror, etc.

It's partly the failure of the peace movement to suggest a comprehensive and viable alternative to military occupation. Although, I'm sure someone's working on this somewhere...
