an article by Infoban Argentina

Government Minister and president of the Provincial Council of Women, Cristina Alvarez Rodriguez, has signed an agreement with the holder of the UNESCO Chair in Argentina, Marcelo López Birra, for joint activities to disseminate plans, programs and actions related to the "culture of peace" in the 135 municipalities of the Province of Buenos Aires.

"The cooperation agreement ' Culture of Peace, Peace Management' , is part of the provincial campaign 'Zero Abuse', which we launched with Governor Scioli and Nobel Peace Prize winners, Aldolfo Perez Esquivel and Rigoberta Menchu, with the aim of promoting measures to eradicate all forms of violence, whether verbal or physical," explained the Minister .

"By means of this initiative, we hope to multiply and strengthen our actions, together with all the ministries and municipalities, and we are working with the Department of Culture and Education to reach each of the 22,000 public schools and to empower children to forge values," added Alvarez Rodriguez from the Joseph Calasanz Institute of Hurlingham.

López Birra, meanwhile, noted that in the framework of the agreement, "we will also seek to create a space of refuge for women at risk in so- called 'Peace Houses', which will be built by the province in collaboration with the schools to protect women who are victims of gender violence until justice is served and they can go home."

The program "Culture of Peace, Peace Management", which is spearheaded by the Ministry of Government intends to develop three areas: the integration of all municipalities in a network of public policy in the province, the search for peacemakers in each village, and the implementation of "peace chairs" in the provincial schools.

Also present at the announcement were Secretary of Children and Adolescents Pablo Navarro, municipal councilors Miguel Quinteros, Mario Palleiro and Ernesto Benitez , Rector of the University of Education ( UNIPE ), Adrian Cannellotto, teachers and students, along with other authorities.

Question(s) related to this article:

The culture of peace at a regional level, Does it have advantages compared to a city level?

Latest reader comment:

CPNN has often carried articles about establishing a culture of peace at the level of the city, but there are also some advantages to promoting a culture of peace at a somewhat broader regional level.

In particular, the culture of peace needs to be based on a sustainable economy, which, in the long run, should depend on local agricultural production more than imported food.  This requires that the unit for the culture of peace include not only the city, but also the agricultural region surrounding it.
